“Fun times at the Davis County Fair”
It was fun for all at the Davis County Fair in Bloomfield, Iowa, Tuesday evening (July 16) with a seven-race card on the one-third-mile track.
In the first race longtime trainer Garry Phillips drove his 2-year-old Dredd gelding Muscles-n-tuff to the winner’s circle after 17 years of not being in the bike. Phillips made his last drive back in September 2002. Phillips, who is 84, carefully eased his colt out of the gate and at the half took the lead to go on and win in 2:33.1. After the race when asked Phillips said it was a fun race and he enjoyed it. When returning to the winner’s circle the crowd was full of cheers and congratulations.
Other winners were Cal’s Hope in the second, getting the win for Duane Roland in a time of 2:18.4. Max Trax Go N Spi took the third for Cary Sturtz, trotting the mile in 2:14.2. Imallaboutthew went wire-to-wire for driver Will Roland and trainer John Saner in 2:17 in race four. Another wire-to-wire winner was Yankee Carmel for the Roland Stable with Duane Roland in the bike, going in 2:24.3 in race five. Pretty Boy Swag kept up his winning ways with a start to finish win, going in 2:10 in the sixth race, making this his sixth straight win for trainer/driver Duane Roland. And in the finale King Rail picked up the win for the Sturtz Stable, crossing the wire in 2:21.4.
Racing action continues on Thursday (July 18) at The Great Jones County Fair with a nine-race card as the older pace and trot will be the feature races. Post time is 11 a.m. (CDT).
